Brown: "Second to none" !?

The Guardian:

"The thought of replacing Mr Brown is ludicrous: having imposed one unelected prime minister on British voters, Labour could hardly inflict a second, even if there were a better candidate available, and there is not."

This states pretty clearly that there is no better candidate [for PM] from within the PLP. He's actually the best they can do. I think that's a horrific outlook for the Labour party, but Frank Field, for a start, talks much more sense. Why is the Grauniad being so insulting? The government will be routed at the election and Brown will be shamed and vilified historically, but he isn't really the best they can do. His arguments are always based on him believing himself to be right or the strength of conviction stemming from the urge and imperative to outflank the Tories, but that doesn't stop most of the policies being crap. Tony Benn would be an improvement. They are struck and horrified I think at how much they could do with having Blair back, but they'd never swallow enough pride (and hatred) to ask him.
